COVER CROPS
the power of crops
At Twala Farming, we believe in the power of cover crops, and that's why we grow a diverse range of plants to enrich our soils. Our cover crop selection includes Red Sunhemp, Black Sunhemp, Sunflower, Buckwheat, Pigeon Pea, and CowPea.
By incorporating these cover crops into our farming practices, we've witnessed healthier plants and healed soils. Cover crops enrich the soil with organic matter and essential nutrients. They have the ability to capture nutrients from the soil and store them in their biomass. When these plants are incorporated back into the soil, they release the stored nutrients, enriching the soil and reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers. This process, known as nutrient cycling, promotes sustainable farming practices. As a result of healthier soils, plants are stronger resulting in a reduction of our fungicide applications and increased yields.
biodiversity
Our cover crops foster biodiversity and provide habitats for beneficial insects. Cover crops provide habitat and food sources for beneficial insects, birds, and microorganisms. They promote biodiversity on the farm, creating a balanced ecosystem that supports natural pest control and reduces the need for chemical interventions. We celebrate the diverse range of plant species we grow and have seen it first-hand as we have not used insecticides on our crops for four years.
We understand the importance of practical solutions in farming communities. That's why our selection of cover crops is not only diverse but also easy to grow and low-maintenance. At Twala Farming we provide training to Small Holder Farmers about the benefits of cover cropping and aim to lend and share seed. This ensures that farmers of all backgrounds can benefit from cover cropping. We're committed to making sustainable practices accessible to everyone, so the advantages of cover cropping are within reach.
building resilience
Cover-Cropping also plays a pivotal role in building resilience within our farming community. They protect the soil from erosion by wind and water, reduce compaction, and improve soil structure. Their root systems act as anchors, preventing nutrient runoff and promoting better water infiltration, leading to increased water-holding capacity of the soil. By embracing cover cropping, we are helping to create a sustainable future by building our soils.
Twala Farming is here to be your trusted guide on your cover cropping journey. We're excited to share our knowledge and experiences with open arms. Let's work together to nurture our soils, improve resilience, and create a thriving farming community.
